Research Interests

Like humans, horses are a naturally occuring dead-end host of the mosquito-borne, West Nile Virus. Patients may be clinically asymptomatic, experience West Nile Virus Fever, or suffer from neuroinvasive disease. The neuroinvasive form induces neuron degeneration in the brain and spinal chord and may lead to flaccid paralysis, recumbency, and death. My research investigates the physiologic and immunologic response of the brain during grave West Nile Virus Encephalitis in order to define the pathophysiology of the disease.
