How to Apply

The primary step in becoming a graduate student at the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine is to connect with a UF CVM faculty member who is willing and able to support you in their laboratory. These connections are most often made at conferences, through networking, or by searching the UF Health Web Directory and trying to find a faculty member with aligning research interests. The faculty member must agree to support you for the duration of your training. Admissions consideration for an applicant can only proceed once an applicant has a faculty mentor and funding arrangement confirmed.

Minimum Admission Criteria

Acceptance into any of UF CVM’s In-Residence graduate degree programs is competitive, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.

All applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.0. GRE scores are no longer required as of Fall 2020.

International applicants must have satisfactory scores on one of these English language exams:

  • IELTS: Minimum score required = 6
  • TOEFL, internet-based: Minimum score required = 80
  • TOEFL, paper-based: Minimum score required = 550

International students who take the IELTS exam: please have your scores transmitted directly to The University of Florida via the IELTS Results Service E-Delivery.

International students who take the TOEFL exam: please have your scores transmitted directly to The University of Florida. UF’s TOEFL school code = 5812.

UF does not accept paper Test Reports Forms or unofficial copies of test report forms from students. Score reports are valid for 2 years from the date of testing.

Application Deadlines

While UF CVM accepts graduate student applications year-round, there are semester-specific deadlines of which you must be aware:

  • Applicants for the Fall semester, beginning in the middle of August: please apply by 15 December
  • Applicants for the Spring semester, beginning in early January, please apply by 1 August
  • Applicants for the Summer semester, beginning in early May, please apply by 1 December

Considerations for International Applicants

Applicants with coursework taken outside the United States should apply far in advance of the stated deadlines of your intended program of study due to the time it will take to process international credentials. All international students who plan to transfer credits MUST submit a course-by-course credential evaluation with grade point average (GPA) included, for all non-US coursework. Transferred credits cannot substitute for required coursework. UF will accept an evaluation from any member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.

Transcripts and Diplomas

UF’s Office of Admissions requires official and unofficial copies of transcripts and diplomas, in the native language and in English. Students can use unofficial copies in their application for initial review, but MUST provide official copies of these documents to the Office of Admissions once they are admitted. Official transcripts can be sent in one of two ways:

  1. Paper transcript received by UF in a sealed envelope or electronic transcripts sent from your institution directly to UF.
  2. Electronic transcripts through FASTER, Parchment, National Student Clearing House, ScribbleSoft, e-Scrip Safe, Credential Solutions, SCOIR or Transcripts Plus. The email address for electronic transcripts is te@admissions.ufl.edu.
