Research Summary:

I am a veterinarian, completed my Master’s in Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology at Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Andhra Pradesh-India. I have completed a research project on “Characterization of MDR Enterococcus species of animal, human and environmental origin with special emphasis on vancomycin resistance”, as a part of my Master’s thesis. I have hands-on experience in Microbiological techniques (isolation and identification of bacteria), Molecular Biology Techniques (DNA Isolation, RNA Isolation, Polymerase chain reaction), Basic immunological techniques, antimicrobial resistance characterization techniques (by PCR and qPCR), Bioinformatics (Genetic Diversity studies by ERIC and REP PCR techniques) and basic statistical techniques (SPSS and basics in R-studio).

Previously worked as a senior research fellow in the project titled “Modelling exposure to biological hazards in the dairy chains of Andhra Pradesh to inform food safety policy”. It was supervised by Javier Guitian and Dr. Tumati Srinivasa Rao (The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and NTR College of veterinary science collaborated on the project.

Research Summary:

Brucellosis in Livestock in Rwanda, Africa Brucellosis is a disease that can cause abortion and reduced milk yield in cattle, as well as fever and chronic fatigue in humans. Socio-economic consequences of Brucella spp. infections include forced unemployment and cost of treatment in infected people, reduced family livestock-related income, as well as interruption of trade in animals and animal products. Vaccination or test-and-slaughter are cost-effective control interventions in high-income countries (e.g., USA). As part of my PhD research, I will assess and compare the costs and benefits of adopting control interventions (vaccination, test-and-slaughter, versus a status-quo scenario) to reduce the burden of brucellosis in livestock in Rwanda; a low-income country with 13 million people and 1.3 million cows. My research will inform policy makers on the socio-economic consequences of acting, or failing to act, on policy options of selected intervention scenarios in livestock populations in Rwanda.

Bachelors of Science-University of Florida During my undergraduate career, I worked at the UF Large Animal Hospital as a treatment technician and research assistant for the UF Equine Performance Laboratory.

Masters of Health Science-University of Florida I moved on to complete a masters degree where I focused on One Health, to thoroughly discover the interconnections between animals, people, and the environment. I participated in toxicology research at the UF Honey Bee Laboratory.

Now I am continuing my education as a PhD student at the UF College of Veterinary Medicine where I will be focusing on how over-hydration via IV fluids and jejunal distention affects the absorption and secretion of the small intestine of the horse .
