Current Research (summary)
My primary research interests are oncogenic viruses and the molecular mechanisms behind oncogenic transformation of host cells. Currently, my dissertation research focuses on a herpesvirus induced urogenital carcinoma in California sea lions. Using next generation sequencing (MiSeq), qPCR, and cell culture we hope to deduce the pathophysiology behind the oncogenic transformation in this disease. Additional areas of interest include molecular diagnostics, viral discovery, clinical aquatic animal medicine, stranding response, rehabilitation, and one health.
