The University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine offers a Master’s degree and a PhD degree in Veterinary Medical Sciences (VMS) (CIP 01.8101) through the Departments of Comparative, Diagnostic & Population Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Immunology, Physiological Sciences, Large Animal Clinical Sciences, and Small Animal Clinical Sciences. Since 1993, nearly 400 students have completed a MS degree or a PhD degree in VMS. In addition, more than 500 students have completed our Master’s online program in VMS with a concentration in shelter medicine, forensic toxicology, or veterinary forensic sciences.
During the academic year of 2020-2021, our graduate student population on campus was 54 (including 22 MS students and 32 PhD students). We are fortunate to have a diverse study body with noted diversity in both our US and international students, with the latter represented from 11 countries (Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Paraguay, Taiwan, Thailand, Uruguay).
Most of our MS students and PhD students on campus complete their training within two and five years, respectively. The MS degree in VMS requires completion of a research thesis and 30 credits in graduate coursework. The PhD in VMS requires completion of a research dissertation and 90 credits in graduate coursework. Students engage in experimental and/or observational research studies relevant to society in Florida, the United States, or globally. Research studies are often conducted in partnership with research collaborators in other academic units at the University of Florida or in international institutions. MS and PhD research results are published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. In addition, our students present their research at local, national, and international scientific meetings. Our graduate advisors and mentors offer guidance, emotional support, and life balance to their mentees to facilitate their career development. After graduation, our new graduates enter the workforce in research or professional positions in academia, government, or industry in the United States and globally.
As members of a top-ranked institution of higher education, our faculty, staff, and students value the impact of safety, diversity, inclusion, ethics, and responsibility on graduate education.
