VME 6604 Literature Survey (Forensic Toxicology)

• Requires the completion of a term paper on a relevant forensic toxicology related topic. Students research the scientific literature available to them online, through the UF e-journals, and other relevant sources and prepare a fully referenced term paper in no less than 5000 words on a subject approved by the course instructor.  2 credits, letter-graded

VME 6605 Toxic Substances

• Provides in-depth information on physiological, pharmacological, and toxic effects of chemical toxins and carcinogens. Modules require critical thinking exercises, interpretation of research and clinical data, and toxicological testing methodologies. Other activities include online discussions of current news articles and scientific publications that relate to toxicology and biochemistry. 3 credits, letter-graded.

VME 6613 Forensic Toxicology I

•  Provides the basic concepts of analytical chemistry as it applies to drug and body fluid analyses. Composed of seven modules with a series of case studies that reinforce concepts and covered in each module. 3 credits, letter-graded.

VME 6614 Forensic Toxicology II

• This course will expand on concepts encountered in Forensic Toxicology I (VME6613), providing in-depth knowledge of pharmacology and toxicology as it pertains to commonly encountered abused and toxic substances. This course is unique in offering modules in doping control, expert testimony and human performance and postmortem toxicology. 3 credits, letter-graded.

VME 6650 Principles of Mammalian Pharmacology

• Introduces concepts related to the cellular actions, therapeutic uses, side effects and toxicity of major drug classes used in humans and non-human species. Therapeutics covered include agents affecting the nervous system (central and peripheral), skeletal muscle, the cardiovascular system and kidneys, as well as agents used to combat microbial diseases. 4 credits, letter-graded.

VME 6766 Laboratory QA/QC

• Introduces key concepts of QA/QC and underscores the need for sound data using appropriate standards and controls, written procedures, and method validation. This course offers a generic description of what is required in the formation of a quality system in any laboratory with reference to FDA, EPA, and ISO guidelines. 3 credits, letter-graded.
