Veronica’s research focuses on legacy pesticides that despite being banned 50 years ago they are can still be found in water and soil. As of right now she is studying Toxaphene (Camphechlor) which has the potential to alter central nervous system neurotransmitter activity, it acts as a noncompetitive γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA-A) antagonist at the chloride channel in brain synaptosomes. Her current objectives are to determine the effects of Toxaphene exposure on zebrafish early life stages, a model fish species widely used for developmental toxicity research.
