General
Is there a list of faculty in the College of Veterinary Medicine?
Yes! You can explore our faculty via their departmental pages, or you can visit the UF Health Directory.
Does the College of Veterinary Medicine offer online and in-residence (face to face) degree programs?
Yes. The accreditation for the CBS MS and PhD and the VMS MS, MPVM, and PhD is the traditional, in-residence platform.
Separately, we offer an online MS in VMS.
Students are not permitted to go between the online and face-to-face programs. Additionally, the online program is self-funded by students. Students may apply to the online program without identifying a faculty advisor.
Is college funding available?
Yes! Every year, the Office of the Dean accepts applications for a limited number of Block Grants to the most competitive PhD applicants. This funding is in the form of a Teaching Assistantship with an annual stipend of $35,000 plus a tuition waiver.
What degrees are offered by the College of Veterinary Medicine?
Students can earn a MS or PhD in Comparative Biomedical Sciences (CBS), a MS, MPVM, or PhD in Veterinary Medical Sciences (VMS) and a thesis or non-thesis VMS MS through the online, distance education platform.
Applications and Admissions
Are applications considered on a rolling basis?
We admit students for Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. PhD students typically apply for the Fall semester, to align with funding opportunities.
Is it necessary to secure a faculty advisor prior to submitting my application?
Yes. Your application will not be considered without a committed faculty mentor AND source(s) of funding to support you for the duration of your program. Your mentor will submit a letter of recommendation and details of your proposed funding as part of your application packet. Funds may come from the mentor, the department, or the student can pledge to self-fund.
If a student is willing to self-fund, can a mentor relationship be established after admission?
No. Identifying a mentor and a funding source is part of the admissions review process. Even self-funded students will need dedicated research/laboratory resources and a mentor’s guidance.
Is the GRE required?
No.
Must I have a DVM or VMD veterinary degree to apply to the graduate programs?
A Bachelor’s degree is required for entry to the graduate programs. Additionally, for admission to the MPVM and combined MS:Residency programs, applicants must have a veterinary degree (DVM, VMD, or an international veterinary degree).
Readmission
I’m a Master: Resident student and I became “inactive” after not registering for classes for at least 3 semesters. Now, it’s time for me to be re-admitted in order to complete my degree. What should I do?
Please apply for re-admission here. You can apply for re-admission during the two semesters that precede your target semester for graduation.
International Students
Can international students apply for the MS or PhD programs?
Yes, international students may seek admission to our degree programs. We value our college’s international graduate students; they are a major part of the world-wide research enterprise. We also enthusiastically support the placement of United States citizens in other countries’ research institutions.
I have earned a professional Veterinary Medicine degree from an international institution. I do not have a typical bachelor’s degree. How do I report this on the application?
Great question, and a very important answer: You must report it as a professional degree. Do not label it as a Bachelor’s degree. Mis-labeling it as a Bachelor’s degree will have negative implications should you decide to try to transfer credits.
Is an English proficiency exam required of international applicants?
Yes. The minimum scores acceptable for graduate admissions are set by the university. Additionally, students seeking teaching assistantships and those entering through the MS Residency program must prove a mastery of Spoken English by achieving minimal score levels in the speaking sections of the TOEFL iBT or IELTS or SPEAK Test. More information is found at the UF English Language Institute.
Current Students
I’m admitted! Will there be an Orientation?
Congratulations! Yes. We hold a Fall orientation every year- all students admitted in the prior Spring and Summer semesters, alongside all newly matriculated Fall students, must participate. Please be sure to complete the next steps for newly admitted on-campus, in-residence students.
